Raviwar Peth is a historic and densely populated commercial neighborhood in the heart of Pune, Maharashtra. Centered at coordinates 18.517454° N and 73.861244° E, it covers a central area with the pincode 411002. Originally called Malkapur, this settlement was founded around 1610 during the Nizam Shahi rule before being revitalized by Nilopant Mujumdar in 1670. It was renamed during the late century Peshwa era after the Marathi word for Sunday. The ward evolved into a foundational trading hub, bordering other traditional peths like Budhwar, Somwar, Kasba, and Rasta Peth. Geographically, it sits on the Deccan Plateau at an elevation of roughly 560 meters above sea level. The terrain is relatively flat, typical of the central Pune basin. The Ward’s layout features narrow, winding, and highly congested streets that reflect its centuries-old urban planning. Localized sectors like Bohri Ali specialize heavily in hardware and iron, while other parts trade in wholesale textiles, plastic products, and gold or silver ornaments. Due to its strategic location and continuous commercial influx, the area experiences high daily foot traffic and significant spatial density. The local climate is tropical with distinct wet and dry seasons, typical of the Pune metropolitan area. Temperatures generally range from 20°C to 35°C throughout the year, with the heaviest rainfall occurring during the monsoon months from June to September. Goods and Services Tax (GST) is an indirect tax which was introduced in India on 1 July 2017 and was applicable throughout India which replaced multiple cascading taxes levied by the central and state governments. It was introduced as The Constitution (One Hundred and First Amendment) Act 2017, following the passage of Constitution 122nd Amendment Bill. The GST is governed by a GST Council and its Chairman is the Finance Minister of India. Under GST, goods and services are taxed at the following rates, 0%, 5%, 12% ,18% and 28%. There is a special rate of 0.25% on rough precious and semi-precious stones and 3% on gold. In addition a cess of 15% or other rates on top of 28% GST applies on few items like aerated drinks, luxury cars and tobacco products. GST was initially proposed to replace a slew of indirect taxes with a unified tax and was therefore set to dramatically reshape the country’s 2 trillion dollar economy.
